Thanks 757jon. I had ordered a 14mm and a 15mm die just in case. Yep 15mm. Made my own flexible exhausts so I can hook it up to the scale pipes and blow oil over everything. Anyone have a recommendation on final needle settings? I’ve got all the cylinders within 10 degrees of each other so I think it’s pretty well broken in. Approximately 3 hours running time

You are probably right that the Saito still has to work hard to get good performance.
What I don't understand is why people don't complain with the TopRC Zero with the FG90R3?
The Zero seems to be the same as the F190 in terms of weight and seize?
My TopRC Zero has the FG 84 with a Keleo exhaust. Performance is amazing. Super scaled out with a Full Cockpit detail. Frankly, I bet mine is on the heavier side .
Here it is at the US Scale Masters last year. Enjoy

What is TOW of your Zero including drop tank?
How much of ballast (if any) did you put in the cowl to have correct CG?

Wow! Looks amazing! What kind of prop do you use and is this best prop for this combo?

TOW 31 lbs. I put around 1.5 lbs in the very front of the cowl.

The prop is a Biala 22 x12 three bladed. Ray English did a mod to the timing hub. Amazing sound, power, and ease of start. Engine unloads to over 7000 rpm in the air. Not good or needed. We try to keep the rpm around 6600. Looking for a larger prop.

Ok, I have a question for the experts. Can a FG 90 be run upside down? Worried about over-heating the Saito in a TopRC FW 190. The top cylinder gets no airflow. If the engine was upside down I could open up the bottom of cowl.

Thanks for info. That's not so much considering scale details and cockpit added. Seeing your plane in the air it's hard to distinguish- model or real plane... it looks and performs fantastic. Good luck and happy landings.

This is really good to know, I really wanted to put the Saito in my FW190 and might consider it now. I think mine is still a bit heavier than yours but it’s got a lot of ballast in it with a GP88 engine. The Saito is probably heavier than the GP so may be able to remove some weight and the forward moment will increase so may be able to remove excess weight.
I don’t see a problem running the engine inverted, the FG60 ran perfectly well on the stand like that, but never tried it on a plane. I would be tempted to baffle the engine better and have it mounted in the upright position. Baffling on these things is paramount. Creating negative pressure behind the engine whether air exit is top, bottom, middle doesn’t matter..

Agree, baffles a must. The prop fan/hub by Ziroli is also an interesting way to go...like on the real plane. On my Zero I cut the cowl flaps off and re-positioned them more open. Made a difference in temps. Unfortunately not possible on FW 190. I've asked my Saito guru Ray English to test running the engine upside down. Breather nipple challenge was first thought. Redoing a Keleo exhaust is the second thought.

Hello, I have been in this hobby for 30 years and it is the first time that I have been releasing the FG-90R3 engine, the ignition burned. It started to smoke and now it smells like burning.I want to know if anyone had this problem

alvarog... That doesn't sound good. Perhaps it's time to get hold of Horizon (or whoever you bought it from) and see if there's a warranty issue to pursue. If not, perhaps CH Ignition would be your best source for replacement. Hope it works out for you.

I personally use A123 2100 @ 6.6 volts from Hangtime Hobbies, but really it's up to you. Anything in the 1000 and up Ma range up to 9 volts will work. (so says the instructions)

Life will work but ....More voltage better. Minimum, Go with 2s lipo in the 2000 mah range. You could also go 3s with a voltage regulator to keep you under the max allowed. Save the life batts for the rx.

I'm not a big fan of using a LiPo battery of any kind of "fuel" powered aircraft. To much hassle removing.reinstalling for charging/possible fire danger, etc.

The lithium Ion from Esprit models are a better choice agreed, but a bit more spendy. I'm cheap. I'm laying up a big Zero with this engine and I did choose lipo for the 3 onboard batteries because they cost less than half of the lithium ion. Their capacity will fly me over 3 days. Then it is the hassle of recharging etc.

No problem. Interesting discovery. I just read my new Saito FG 90 instructions and it says you can use a 2s or 3s lipo (6-12v)
BUT the ignition module says 6-8.4 volts. HMMMMMMM. I'll stick with 2s for now. My FG 84 has been running great. I emailed Adrian at CH Ignitions and will post his thoughts.
Also, getting ready for a break-in run with my new Ray English modified FG 90. As some of you know, Ray has rebuilt over a 1000 Saito engines and even licensed his mods back to Saito. I've been to his shop and there are always 6-7 engines on his workbench...mostly FG 84 and FG 90's.
He strongly recommends the following:
*2s lipo
*15:1 oil mixture
*Oil is KLOTZ KL-200
*Sunoco Optima 94 octane gas, no alcohol and very low lead Note: I order this gas in a 5 gallon pale from a local distributor. Runs about $60.

These ideas, along with baffles and exit air, have all worked great for me. Hope some of this can help others.

Hey Jim, I had a recent conversation with Horizon Hobbies,, Interestingly enough He could not give me the exact timing spec the factory sets up in these engines. The disturbing thing is he told me that if Mr. English modifies a new engine, we get to forgo the warranty. Caught between and betwixed here..

Kinda interesting that Horizon couldn't (or wouldn't?) tell you what the factory timing was set at. I found both my FG60 and FG90 at 45 deg BTDC. I've modified both of mine to reset the timing @ 28-30 deg.
