Balsa USA 1/4 Scale SPAD XIII Build
#26
It can feel like nobody reads them sometimes !
I think before you click into your thread it shows to the right a view number...
Just checked 583 views. It can be tough sometimes when you try to add info, pics, humor and nobody will talk to you !
I haven't built the spad yet..But I would love to be able to say one day I had built all the 1/4 Balsa USA WW1 birds !

Thanks for the reality check Foodstick.
The SPAD is my first BUSA kit. The second is a D.VII sitting in its box in the workshop. Only thing I have taken out of the box so far is the instruction book. I started to work on how I want to do the wings on this one. I really like the three-piece modification on the SPAD, but the D.VII has only one set of struts per side, so storage/transport fixtures will be needed. Or I might have to give your two-piece fus' idea a try. Do you have any pictures you could post here, or a link if already posted elsewhere?
However, I have a few repair/restore jobs ahead of the D.VII.

The D7 goes together pretty fast with the one piece wings.. its a BIG top wing.. the bottom is quite a bit smaller. In fact you might want to make a split top wing and a one piece bottom...Without the wires and the nice design of the outer struts its a pretty quick assembly at the field.. It REALLY helps to have a waist high table (at the field) with these planes to work on them.
I didn't take many pics of my N11 build when it came to the fuse split. I was doing a lot of head scratching and walking around the table... instead of using my camera. I sort of built it on the plane without drawing anything up. I am just getting started on a 1/3 DR1.. I am gonna try to get some pics of the fuse split as I build it.

I just assumed you had seen the N11 fuse split thread?

There is also a video on the second page that shows how it comes apart.

My Feedback: (17)
Noel, I have read and enjoyed all your updates, pictures and videos. You have built a beautiful airplane. Your modifications to the kit are outstanding. I wish you had done a complete construction thread, it would have been very informative. The BUSA Spad XIII is not one that many modelers want it build, it is more complex. I have built several BUSA kits over the years, the larger ones are the Fly Baby Biplane, Cub, Sopwith Pup (2), Fokker D VII (2), Spad XIII and now building the Fokker Dr 1. I have construction threads on RC Scale Builder web site in the Balsa USA section.
I have maiden my SPAD XIII and now working over the bugs. Here are pictures of my SPAD.
Thanks for a very enjoyable read

Hey Rich, Thanks. Likewise on your SPAD --> great looking aircraft.
I thought about doing a build thread and that was one of the reasons I shot pic's along the way, but when I started I did not know how long I would take to build it and did not want a 5-year long build thread! As it turned out, it was about 8 months from gluing the first sticks together until the maiden. Amazing how quick it goes when you are enjoying the build. This was my first BUSA build. I guess the D.VII will go quicker now that I have an idea of the methods that are used.

Hi, thanks for sharing the building of your model. I hope it is still flying and giving you plenty of pleasure.
I will start to build one and for coincidence with an OS 33GT, probably I will assembly it tilted, trying to hide the spark plug connector.
However, I woul ask you to be so kind and send me the 3D drawing from the exhaust pipe, with this I can easily print, it looks preety nice and would save some drawing hours.

If you want to know more about my airplanes, plese search for mario knoll at the Face Book.
Take care!

Hello Redtail, nice to see another one being built. Soon we’ll have a squadron.
I simply covered the wheels with SIG Koverall. The final effect is amazing. It’s worth to do it.
Wish you
and all friends a nice Xmas.

Koveral doesn’t have any adhesive. Close to the hub and at the border I glued with low viscosity CA.
Since I decided to not to have one piece wings, I instaled this thin aluminum sheet to better hide the gap at the joint.
