Didn't take much to line everything up. Nice clearance for silicone anti vibration dots.

Smaller radius's in the corners for the chin hatch as there is less room for them.

I'd love to visit New Zealand again. I truly wish I could swing by and learn how its done.

Nice looking design anyway.

You would be welcome Bill.
Got the chin cowl spacer done. Took a bit of head scratching to work out how to do it with only 2 hands. Doing the release agent now. I use Chemtrend Chemlease 75. Quick and easy to use.

Got the chin cowl on. The threaded rod works well to hold things together. Now I can glass the fuselage.

The cowl popped off nicely and I have made some adjustments and given it a light sand (if you can call 40 grit light). It really needs the upper nose air intake which will go on after the glass which is today's job.

Got the glass down on the first side. The seam will be over the balsa on the center line. There is no way of sanding out joins over foam. I got it down nicely but had to keep working it with a roller and heat gun during the cure. I had forgotten the cut out in the chin cowl for the UC so got that done.

Cutout in chin cowl for UC leg. I way prefer this method of mounting the UC. Easier lighter stronger.

Sanded off the high spots with 40 grit. Added a layer of lighter 100gm glass.

Finishing the plug requires quite a bit of watching paint dry. So I'm going to get on with the flying surfaces. The wing is reasonably big at 69.15 sq dm (1071 sq in) as I want it to weigh 5kg. Foils are SD 8035 12% root 10% tip. Stab will be 25% wing area and SD 8020 10%. I don't know the wing position yet. I'm going to build the model and then install the wing so the CG is just aft of the neutral point. The Stab is going to have big elevators so I can keep it as far back as possible. Servos will be at the front.

Got all the glass on and gave it a rough sand. Put on some undercoat to see what I was up for. No big issues there so it won't take too long to get it into shape. The undercoat has helped to pull the look together, just need to get the upper nose air intake on now.

Big Bosch orbital sander makes short work of the sanding task.

Looking at the upper nose air intake. Everything is big on this model, I'm going to use bigger wheels and spats too. Spinner is 4".

Here is the upper nose air intake. Not sure how the look is going to work out. I will need to get some undercoat on it to integrate it. The rest is coming on nicely. I will be setting up for molding next week.

How about something like an NACA type inlet?

Hi Ken. I like the idea of NACA inlets I think they were designed as efficient low drag intakes but I am OK with drag on this airframe. I had several reasons for doing it this way. Obviously a crankcase cooling intake so as far forward as possible. But also to add area up the front above the center line and to soften the rather steep slope up to the canopy.

More undercoat, so I got a look at the upper intake blended in. Looks in proportion now. Compared to my Amadeus this model has a more brutal look. It is a big canvas for the paint job. I can see lightening bolts on the horizon.

Hey Rodney ,

Me thinks it will look so much better with a couple of side inlet vents.....it will also help with the cooling of the YS during those long uplines......

regards

Hi Mavros. Thanks for the input. I suppose you mean cheek cowls. I think I am OK for cooling as the chin intake is huge compared to a YS and the upper intake is pretty big too. I willl be putting a DA50 in it and there is plenty of room for that too. I like the look of cheek cowls but I think it would look a bit busy with other 2 intakes as well. I've put the last undercoat on and am waiting a couple of days for it to shrink back and then I will sand it and put on the top coat. I'm starting to set up the splitter plates while I wait. The ali bar in the fuselage has been great for working on it.

The intake on top of the nose is the most beneficial, especially for a YS. Need cool air over the crankcase.
