I'm building the TopRC F9F Cougar
#127
Hi, thx, I will try to explain the weight:
did not use the original thrust pipe, use inlet lip, double wall only at the end, mine is 90g lighter
all servos are graupner HVS930, 23g each
except the two servos for doors of front wheel, each 6g
no heavy metal structure for door mechanism
no inlets and no original fuel tank (heavy), no hopper, flex tank max lighter
changed aluminium wing tubes to carbon tubes
put the batteries in front as well
This all must result in a 1kg lighter cougar. My K70 might be a little bit heavier than the JetsMunt70 and my batteries are relative small, so the leads of 140g in the front is explainable. I don‘t use CG of 175mm, 185mm will be better.
I am looking forward to the first flights :-)!

I am around 175mm but I don't still test the cg in flight as I did only one and was short, 5mm so just time to rim and choose the good rate for aileron and elevators and test the flap and compensation.

With soft tanks (german: Beuteltank) you don‘t need any UAT. There will never be air bubbles in it and you can fly longer, until the tank is almost empty. I use a 1.5l tank for the K70.

Thin Wing
I'm having trouble finding thin wing servos with regular top mounts for the elevators, any recommendations. Also, i ordered standard servos for my flaps/speedbrakes but like others, my mounts are covers with a wood plate and will only fit mini. Is everyone installing mini's, or has anyone cut open the wood plate to fit a standard servo.

Appreciate the feedback, what about speedbrakes/flaps. What are you using. And what are you using on the elevator. Just wanna make sure im clear before i go out and buy more. Also, i have a few (Savox SC 1258tg) still in unopened packs if anyone is looking to do some trading or would like to purchase.

It's also possible to use light standard midi servos if used servo frames. I made some frames from carbon for elevators and rudder:
And for front wheel as well:
And Flaps:

Tail Assembly
When putting the tail on the fuselage, did you glue the stab tubes into the elevator stabs, or did you screw them down. If you glue them, you will never be able to get to the elevator servos again.

I permanently glued the vertical stabilizer to the fuselage. For the stabs I glued the two carbon fiber rods to one stab only. I then put some packaging tape around the rods to take out the slop/play when assembled. I only have one screw holding the stabs together when assembled for flight. The screw goes in to one rod from underneath the stab. I can easily pull the stabs apart and put them in a storage bag when transporting the jet. With this method, I can get to the servos in the stabs if need be. I recall there are some pictures in the manual showing how to secure the stabs for flight, which I use. It all still seemed flimsy before the first flight but I have not had any issues after 20+ flights.

Cockpit
Building another Cougar. I had the Skymaster X-treme F9F, now building the TopRC kit. The TopRC jet looks to be much better built, and the paint is MUCH better than the SM. Paint from the SM Cougar would come off in my hand when I picked it up...
Using MKS HV747 & HV1220 servos. Gear is painted, but work keeps getting in the way of my hobby. Planning to power with a JetCat P100RX. This one's gonna take a while. Most of these pics are from my SM Cougar, painted the bottom white, main gear doors added, Fei Bao F9F cockpit added.

Don't have a link, but I have brand new one in the box. Paid $275 for it shipped from China. Will ship to you for $250. These are pics of the NIB cockpit.
Send me a PM if interested.

Landing Gear
Has anyone installed the TopRc Electic Retracts. I just received my Retract Controller after months of waiting, but i cant get it working right. All the lights on the controller turn on green and stay on. They ate mot resppndi to commands. Any recommendstions for connections. There were no sipploed cables so i had to guess at positive and negative terminal locations when i built my cables

available from Dreamworks (they call it Prolink controller, but its a Xicoy...)

I have the Dreamworks controller in mine with Electron EVO 40 retracts and fully working, sequenced, main and nose gear doors. The Xicoy (with a Xicoy data terminal) is infinitely adjustable and reliable.
Good luck.

just maidened my cougar last week, using a swiwin 60 for power,19 pounds take off weight with fuel ,flew off grass kind of a long take off run
but once it was airborne accelerated rapidly suprising how fast it was, handled like a trainer landed like a breeze with good nose high approach no bad habits
also very good slow flight manners.
will be shortening the nose gear as the nose high stance burned all the grass at the field ,you could see all my taxi and take off path with scorched grass.
to all those reports that it wont fly on a 60 it proved them all wrong
