Rob,
Thanks for the info on the pilot bust. I want to put in a cockpit and full jet pilot figure in my ghost but am worried that it might extend to far down into the fuse and impede the airflow to the back bottom fuse vents. I might just have to settle for a bust which might be fine as you can’t see much of the cockpit due to the small canopy anyways.

I was getting my Ghost ready for the maiden flight and did the first start of my IL-230 in the air frame. The engine ran really rough. I couldn't get more then 3,000 RPM. I brought plane and during the inspection, I removed the 3 crankcase covers and found parts of rubber. you can see in the photo. Looks like it came from some sort of gasket maker material. I'm assuming this was the cause of the rough engine and have to assume that one or more carb's have sucked some of this stuff in. Any thoughts or suggestions?

This material is used between all parts of the engine. But I don’t think it can cause such a power loss.

Take care that all carbs are in factory setting. Are all 3 fireing ?

HI Tom, that was my other thought as well. I think one may not be firing. The first cylinder by the firewall was running a lot cooler and I didn't feel the same exhaust temp as the other two. but all three carbs are set to the factory setting, but I'll verify.

Engine ignition is installed in the right way?

1 (is the cylinder near firewall) 2 (middle cylinder) 3 (is the cylinder near the prop).
Be careful with fuel consumption, with 1000cc I made 7-8 minutes of flight.

Hello.. Yes, I have the connections correction. I'm going to reset the needles to factory setting. L=1.75 turns and H=1.5. Is this a good start?

Can someone verify with me that the correct default needle settings to start out with are 1 1/2 on High and 1 3/4 on Low? My low needle was much lower then this. I'm starting to think that was the problem. I can't test until later today or tomorrow though

mine is L= 1,25 H= 1.5 (a bit less after several flights)

you can lean the L till the engine needs a delay on the throttel to accelerate from idle to full

Hello Tom, I have a Kolm 65 and I need to set the timing. Should it be set at the normal 28 degrees before TDC?.

but most time on the first flights you will find out that H is to rich. the engine sounds good on ground (about 5000rpm) but is too rich at 6000+. so you will Need 3-4 flight to set it up perfect.
to see if all Zylinders are adjustet the same, check the dirt in the exhaustpipes with you fingers and compare.

My friend Simon wrote a very good description. maybe he will post it here later.

Hello Tom, I had a maiden flight with my Carf Spitfire this week with Kolm 150-3 cylinders, and I had the same problem above ,the H( High) was too rich when I took off.. I didnt understand when you said to check the dirt in the exhaustpipes with fingers and compare. Does it means lets supose, I will lean the center cylinder High needle and keep the Front and Rear cylinder in the same way ?
thank you
Antonio

I am looking into these engines and would like to know if they'll be available in the US anytime soon.

Default Ez50-v4

Hello. For my project I would really need to 3D print a dummy of the EZ50 with the starter included. Do anyone know how to obtain a file?

Cheers Tom!
I maiden'ed it yesterday, everything was good, only problem you can hear is engine tuning, i thought it was tuned well while holding it on the ground but as soon as it got airborne the engine coughed until i gave more throttle. I noticed in the air the cough always happened as i was throttling up.

It was a bit scary for that to happen on the maiden but all is well, any ideas? high or low needle setting? Here's the vid listen how the rev's drop on takeoff.

Thanks

Rob

Hey guys, anyone have any insight on what is going on with Kolm engines? Their dealer/service here in the US just parted ways. Is Kolm no longer making or servicing engines?

Hopefully Tom will chime in here and let us know what is going on. It seems like he either works for them or at least represents them at events. As per the old US rep/dealer and a news release yesterday, Kolm have also decided not to honor any existing engine manufacturer warranties on their engines. I am not at all happy about this as I have a 155 IL that I have run four times on a test stand and now the ignition seems to have crapped out on me.

Who was the old dealer/representative? I think I know but am a bit unsure. I also saw that Toni Clark Practical Scale GmbH had also carried Kolm engines but looking at their site, I now do not see it as so.

Thanks,
Lars

Kolm USA was handled by Vogelsang Aeroscale. They did all sales and service here in the states as far as I know. Here is a link to the announcement from their website from a few days ago.

https://www.aeroscale.shop/blogs/new...y-kolm-engines

I know that AMR in Canada used to sell Kolm Engines as well. I just checked on their site and they no longer carry any Kolm products. Not sure what is going on but it doesn’t look good.
